Did you know that all Vassar students, alumni, and employees have access to a premium version of a password manager just by signing up using your Vassar email? Today we’re going to be talking about Lastpass, a password manager Vassar provides premium accounts for.
First, let’s review what a password manager is (you can also visit this page for more details!). These are tools that help you store, generate, and protect your password all in one place. Generally, you will store your username and password for whatever sites you want in your manager of choice, and then when you go to log into those sites, your password manager will prompt you for the password to access this vault of passwords, and then fill in the credentials for the site for you. This means that you can have unique, complex passwords for every account you have without having to remember them all. Many password managers will also help you create strong passwords and even tell you if your password has been in a leak.
Lastpass is a password manager with all of these features, as well as others such as other features like being able to share passwords across devices and create emergency access to your account. Vassar students and alumni have access to Lastpass Premium with an active vassar.edu or alum.vassar.edu email, and employees have access to both Lastpass Premium and Lastpass Enterprise. It’s recommended to use Lastpass Premium for person accounts, like banking and personal emails, and Enterprise for things like sharing passwords and information between colleagues and for other work-related needs.
Setting up your account is easy! Just visit https://lastpass.com/vassar, enter your Vassar email in the first field, and a personal email in the second field (which will be your login ID for Lastpass). Then check your Vassar email for a confirmation, and follow the instructions sent. For Enterprise, first set up a Premium account through those steps. Then put in a request for an Enterprise account at https://servicedesk.vassar.edu/catalog_items/751530-password-management/service_requests/new.portal. Check your Vassar email for an email, and follow the instructions to link your Enterprise and Premium account so you can have all your passwords in one place.
It’s as easy as then to get access to a high quality password manager and start being even more secure with your accounts online! For more information, visit the CIS page on Lastpass. Happy password managing!
