October is the month of Cybersecurity Awareness! There’s no better time to strengthen your digital defenses. Whether you’re studying, working, or connecting online, good cybersecurity habits help protect your personal information and the entire Vassar community. As a reminder all current Vassar students or community members with a vassar.edu or alum.vassar.edu email address can enroll in LastPass Premium for free! Vassar College Employees have access to LastPass Enterprise for free, this one is more geared towards storing passwords for Vassar related work or sharing it among other employees.
LastPass offers a range of benefits that make managing and protecting your passwords simple and secure. It allows you to generate strong, unique passwords for every account, reducing the risk of unauthorized access if one password is compromised. With LastPass, you only need to remember one master password, as all others are safely stored in an encrypted vault accessible across all your devices. It uses AES-256 bit encryption and a zero-knowledge architecture, ensuring that even LastPass cannot see your data, and supports multi-factor authentication for added security. The platform also offers convenient features like auto-fill for logins, secure password sharing, and password health monitoring, which alerts you to weak or reused passwords.
If you’re interested in checking whether your passwords are secure or if any of your accounts have been compromised in a data breach, Have I Been Pwned? is an excellent resource. The website allows you to enter your email address to see if it appears in any known security breaches, helping you identify which accounts may need password updates or additional protection. It’s a quick and easy way to stay informed about your online security and take proactive steps to keep your personal information safe.
As it is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it’s a great time to remember the simple actions that help keep our digital community safe. Always recognize and report scams or suspicious emails, especially those asking for personal information or login credentials. Be sure to email catchoftheday@vassar.edu if you get any phishing emails to let others be aware of such recent attempts as well. Keep your software and devices updated to protect against security vulnerabilities and ensure you have the latest protections in place. Use strong, unique passwords for each account, and enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible. Finally, stay alert online. Think before you click, download, or share information. Small steps like these make a big difference in creating a secure and trustworthy digital environment for everyone.
